On January 22, 2007 the Honolulu Advertiser printed a story on ATV’s and other off-road vehicles on illegal terrain. They go further saying, we are “...endangering beach users and wildlife, and destroying cultural resources and vegetation, including indigenous plants.”

Our petition is not to argue against this particular article, but to prevent stereotyping of those who practice off-road sports, the possible closing of legal off-road trails, and allowing 4x4 enthusiast access to the many trails that are out there.

Outdoor recreation has been a part of the Hawaii culture ever since the Hawaiian's first walked bare foot through forests and beaches untouched by Foreigners.

It is our culture to spend quality time with family and friends doing everything that we can possibly do outdoors. From fishing and surfing to riding ATV’s and exploring off road terrain  - this is our life, this is how we have fun.

Unfortunately like any other sport there are those who abuse the system; the homeowner in the article, for his own safety has every right to complain. This is why the 4x4 Community wanted to prove that not all 4x4 enthusiasts disrespect the public and the land, in fact majority of us are very different from what the media portrayed us to be. We do not dig up plants or vegetation to create new trails, rather we use trails that have been there for decades, we do not take our vehicles where people can get hurt, rather we use spotters to help guide us safely through the rough terrain.

People are now making statements that owner’s of off-road vehicles should only be allowed to drive on land that they own. Having 20 acres of land to call our backyard is something that most of us cannot afford.

This is our petition:

  • Keep Mokule’ia trails, Kaena Point trails, and all other off-road trails open to off-road sports!

  • Allow true 4x4 enthusiast who respects the Hawaii public, who has true love for the sport, and respects the Aina “land”, access to ALL trails on
    ALL Islands!

  • Do NOT allow Bills such as S.B NO. 2926 to pass that has strict penalties!

This is where we were born and raised, this is where we now raise our children;
the outdoors is our backyard!
